Carol Mahler will sign her new book, Guy LaBree:  Barefoot Artist of the Florida Seminoles, at noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, March 12, at Hooked on Books. Published by the University Press of Florida, the book features 42 of LaBree's paintings, including the two images that hang in the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.  Mahler interviewed LaBree about each painting, and she researched the cultural and historical contexts of his artwork that focuses on Seminole legends, life/traditions, history, and Florida wildlife.  Her essays provide a unique "fourth dimension" to the artist's realistic and detailed canvases.  For information about the event, please call 941-637-8002.  Details about the book are available at http://upf.com/book.asp?id=MAHLEF09.

On Saturday, March 20, at 1:00 p.m. at the Military Heritage Museum in Fishermen's Village in Punta Gorda, Dr. Robert Smiley will present "The Greatest Naval Disaster," which will detail the mission of the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) in delivering the atomic bombs which were dropped on Japan and the disaster to the ship following the mission.

As it was cruising from being provisioned in Guam to Leyte, a lone Japanese submarine found the USS Indianapolis in its periscope and fired six torpedoes.  These torpedoes hit the Indianapolis, and it sank in 10,000 feet of water in just 12 minutes.

Although the radioman sent the SOS and it was received, no assistance was sent and the men spent many days in the shark infested waters where many of them died. Those still alive were sighted by accident and rescued.

Dr. Smiley tells the story with words and photos of the ship.  His service on the battleship, USS Missouri and the submarine, USS Toro, give him a unique insight into this epic sinking of this US warship. For more information, please call 575-9002.

On Wednesday, March 24, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., three original Navajo Code Talkers will speak briefly and answer questions in Center Court in Fishermen's Village, followed by a reception in the Military Heritage Museum.  According to www.navajocodetalkers.org, the Navajo Code Talkers were young men who fashioned the most ingenious and successful code in military history, transmitting secret communications on the battlefields of WWII at a time when the best cryptographers were falling short.  Serving with distinction from 1942-1945, their unbreakable code played a pivotal role in saving countless lives and hastening the war's end.
